Banff International Research Station centre at the Institute of Mathematics in Granada
The Banff International Research Station (BIRS) is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Granada (IMAG) in Spain. Recently awarded a prestigious "Maria de Maeztu Seal of Excellence" grant of $1.8M euros by the Spanish Research Agency (AEI) and supported by the Andalusian government, IMAG will join CMO-Oaxaca in Mexico, IASM-Hangzhou in China, and BIRS-UBCO in Canada as a BIRS-affiliate centre.
IMAG will be the first European centre for BIRS, offering its acclaimed scientific programming within easy access of the European mathematical community, against the rich natural and cultural backdrop of stunning Andalusia. IMAG director Dr. Joaquin Perez said, "The mathematical community at IMAG is delighted with this project of collaboration with BIRS. We are sure this collaboration will be an excellent instrument for the quantitative and qualitative growth of mathematical research at IMAG and throughout Andalusia. In today's global world, the direct exchange of information between researchers is very necessary for the advancement of scientific knowledge, and this is a great way to promote it".
The full IMAG opportunities will be made available through the BIRS call for proposals that will be issued in June 2022 for the 2024 program. However, we are currently planning a BIRS-IMAG pilot program to be hosted in Granada as early as 2023, and the BIRS Scientific Board will consider a limited number of workshops proposals for the 2023 cycle. Please write to the BIRS Scientific Director (birs-director@birs.ca) for further information, if you are interested in developing such a workshop.
AWM-BIRS Partnership
BIRS is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM). A long-time host of the hugely successful Women in X programs, BIRS will expand its collaboration with AWM in the following ways:
AWM and BIRS together will sponsor small group follow-ons to the Women in X conferences proposed by women who have multiple intersectional identities. These include, but need not be limited to, women from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) communities; women with visible or invisible disabilities; and women who are neuro-diverse, gender-diverse, or gender fluid. AWM will provide travel funding for these groups, and BIRS will provide research space, food, lodging and other on-site amenities through its Focused Research Groups and Research in Teams programs. For more details on this funding, see AWM’s web page AWM-BIRS Partnership.
In addition, BIRS will offer opportunities for women and early-career mathematicians in all its workshops by showcasing AWM's programs in support of research, including AWM Travel Grants; AWM's new research journal La Matematica; and AWM workshops and conferences, such as the AWM Research Symposium.
AWM president, Kathryn Leonard, expressed her delight at this new partnership, noting that "BIRS has long supported AWM, including providing the site for the first Women in X research collaboration conference. We are thrilled to
expand and formalize that partnership.”

La version française suit ci-dessous.
La versión en español sigue abajo.
The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is accepting proposals for its 2023 program. The deadline for proposal submissions for 5-Day Workshops is Wednesday, September 15, 2021.
In 2023, BIRS will again be hosting a 48-week scientific program at its station in Banff and at least 16 workshops at its affiliated station, Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO), in Mexico. In addition, 10 workshops are anticipated at the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM) in Hangzhou, China; and 12 will be held at BIRS’s new centre at UBC-Okanagan (UBCO) in Kelowna.
BIRS provides an environment for creative interaction and the exchange of ideas and knowledge in the mathematical, statistical, and computing sciences, with a commitment to advancing research frontiers and facilitating connections between related disciplines and industrial sectors. BIRS and its affiliated facilities offer full accommodation, board, and research facilities at no cost to the invited in-person attendees.
Proposed programs should aim to connect with diverse mathematical communities, in particular those that are geographically close to the locations of the proposed program, and pay special attention to training and mentorship of junior researchers. Some workshops at BIRS-UBCO are expected to relate to statistics, data science, and artificial intelligence. Applicants are asked to take into consideration BIRS's commitment to increasing the participation of women and other underrepresented minorities in the mathematical sciences research and applications.
Full information about BIRS programs can be seen at:
https://www.birs.ca/programs/general-program-descriptions/.
Proposal submission guidelines are available at:
https://proposals.birs.ca/guidelines.
In addition, BIRS will operate its Research in Teams and Focused Research Group programs, which allow smaller groups of researchers to get together for up to two weeks of uninterrupted work at the station. Proposals for projects involving Research in Teams or Focused Research Groups can be submitted at any time and are processed subject to availability. These proposals must be received at least 4 months before their requested start date.
All proposal submissions must be made using the online submission form at:
https://proposals.birs.ca.

https://www.birs.ca/programs/general-program-descriptions/
https://www.birs.ca/applicants/guidelines/
