Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Board

Diversity statement

BIRS's programs reflect our mission of promoting research at the frontiers of science and technology. Our events are destinations for learning, dissemination of knowledge, and raising community awareness. They embody our passion for critical thinking, discovery and innovation. We believe diversity is essential to excellence and that it takes all of us to shape a better world. It is therefore an integral part of our mission to create and foster a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.

Diversity refers to the variety of experiences, values, and perspectives that arise from differences in culture and circumstance. Such differences may be consequences of race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, indigenous knowledge and culture, language, abilities/disabilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic background, geographic regions and other factors. We strive to create an atmosphere where both similarities and differences are valued and celebrated.
