Diversity statement

BIRS programs embody our mission of promoting research at the frontiers of science and technology; they reflect our passion for critical thinking, discovery and innovation. Our events are destinations for collaborative learning, dissemination of knowledge, and community-building. We believe diversity is essential to excellence and that it takes all of us to shape a better world. It is therefore an integral part of our mandate to create and foster a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment, where anyone can participate and feel empowered to make a positive contribution.

Diversity refers to the variety of experiences, values, and perspectives that arise from differences in culture and circumstance. Such differences may be consequences of race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, indigenous knowledge and culture, language, visible or invisible abilities and disabilities, neurodivergence, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, geographic regions and other factors. BIRS does not support discrimination based on any such factors. We strive to create an atmosphere where both similarities and differences are valued and celebrated.
