Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "EPIC - Enabling Process Innovation through Computation" workshop from August 7th to August 12th, 2016.

The advances in the mathematical models of multiphase flows and computational algorithms in the last four decades have largely been unnoticed by the processing industries. This is in sharp contrast with the aerospace, automotive, and electronics industries where this led to a revolutionary growth of technology. Therefore, we would like to consolidate a group of researchers from academia and the industry to discuss and push for enabling process innovation through advanced mathematical modeling and scientific computation. The processing industries are one of the mainstays of the North American industrial growth and therefore, we believe, that this is one of the most important perspectives for the applied mathematics community in its endeavor to serve the needs of the modern society. This is particularly important in current times, in view of the shale oil and gas developments in North America that offer great opportunities for satisfying the immediate energy demands of humanity. These developments involve new processes that have to be studied and optimized carefully and this offers new great opportunities for mathematical research and its impact on process industries.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT)..
