Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "New Directions in Iwasawa Theory" workshop from June 26th to July 1st, 2016.

Iwasawa theory is an active research area in number theory. It concerns the rates of growth of arithmetic invariants of certain systems of algebraic equations. Questions of this kind enter into applications of number theory to cryptography and error correcting codes. The Main Conjectures of Iwasawa theory predict that the growth rates being considered can be computed in an entirely different way via functions arising from calculus. This workshop is about recent advances in Iwasawa theory, and in particular on a new approach to the subject using tools from algebraic geometry and K-theory. These tools make it possible to study finer measures of growth rates, and they raise the question of developing Main Conjectures for these finer measures.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT)..
