Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Hypercontractivity and Log Sobolev Inequalities in Quantum Information Theory" workshop from February 22nd to February 27th, 2015.

Quantum theory is now being used to develop powerful new computers and new methods of cryptography capable of security that is not possible with classical devices. The underlying theory uses profound mathematical ideas applied far beyond their original setting.

This workshop will focus on hypercontractivity and log Sobolev inequalities, which were originally developed in connection with quantum field theory but subsequently found applications in fields ranging from theoretical computer science to discrete probability theory. Recently these techniques have been applied to problems in quantum information theory. There is a need for a forum where mathematicians working on these topics and scientists working in quantum information theory can interact. Experts from across the world are
coming to Banff to share perspectives and expertise that cross disciplinary boundaries.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
