Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Spectral Theory of Laplace and Schroedinger Operators" workshop from July 28th to August 2nd, 2013.

Energy levels of quantum particles and frequencies of electromagnetic waves determine how real-world particles and radiation behave, and hence what humans can (and cannot) do with our technology. These energies and frequencies are studied mathematically in terms of the ``spectra'' of the Laplace operator and its quantum cousin the Schr\"odinger operator. The workshop on Spectral Theory of Laplace and Schr\"{o}dinger Operators will bring together scientists working on isoperimetric inequalities and shape optimization, universal and semi-classical inequalities, and the nodal geometry of eigenfunctions, in an effort to better understand the geometrical constraints that nature places upon physics.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
