Description
The Banff International Research Station will host the "Metric Geometry, Geometric Topology and Groups" workshop from August 4th to August 9th, 2013.
In recent years, geometry has left its traditional home of the plane
or even curved surfaces, but is now studied in many settings from the
discrete (imagine a newsprint of a sphere or a parabola) to the
singular (such as the surface of a crumbled piece of paper) and the
infinite dimensional. The different settings require new tools and
shed light on deeper aspects of the classical theory that had been
shrouded by the simplicity of the local situations present there.
The researchers brought together at this meeting will discuss the
implications of various types of periodicity and its failure, how much
energy is required in the construction of various surfaces, and how
the small scale and large scale structures of spaces restrict one
another.
The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
