Description
The Banff International Research Station will host the "Permutation Groups" workshop from July 21st to July 26th, 2013.
The theory of permutation groups is essentially the theory of symmetry for mathematical and physical systems. It therefore has major impact in diverse areas of mathematics. The subject was at heart of the study of the group theory starting in the late 1800's. The subject thrived in the 1960's but since
the completion of the unique accomplishment of classifying all finite simple groups in the 1980's, the last decade particular has produced an explosion of beautful results with applications to number theory, logic, algebraic geometry, polynomials and other areas of mathematics.
The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
