Description

A meeting on Tropical Geometry, organized by Ilia Itenberg (Strasbourg), Grigory Mikhalkin (Toronto) and Yan Soibelman (Manhatten), will be hosted by BIRS next week, March 4-9, 2007. World-leading experts in different areas of Mathematics will gather in Bnaff to discuss recent advances and new perspectives in this young branch of Geometry built on the (max,+) arithmetics. By now Tropical Geometry has already contributed powerful tools that helped to solve a number of classical problems in Real and Complex Geometry. The focus of the workshop will be inner foundations of this new subject, its Mathematical applications as well as connections with Physics.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the US National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
