The Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM), inaugurated on November 16, 2017, is designed to provide a tranquil and stimulating environment in which mathematicians from all corners of the world can get together to work, think, and exchange ideas. IASM is based in the beautiful city of Hangzhou. We welcome around one hundred visiting scholars, from about fifty universities and research institutions throughout the world every year. The faculty keep pushing the envelope of mathematical sciences and have established an extensive network of contacts with international academic institutions and colleagues. 

IASM is excited to host workshops in collaboration with Banff International Research Station (BIRS). We look forward to welcoming all participants to share their ideas here at IASM.


Do I need a visa in order to come to IASM-Hangzhou?

You may need a visa from the Chinese government in order to enter the country as a visitor to IASM-Hangzhou. For those who intend to come to China for exchanges, visits, study tour and other activities, you may apply for the Type F visa. For details, please refer to the Chinese consular affairs website:

Where can I find information for travel funding? 

Although IASM provides meals and accommodation to workshop participants free of cost, it unfortunately cannot subsidize travel costs to and from the workshop venue.

What are my transportation options for getting to IASM-Hangzhou?

The closest airport is Hangzhou International Airport (HGH). If there is no suitable flight, participants can fly to Shanghai first and take a coach or the high-speed train to Hangzhou:

For those who arrive at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG), you may either take a coach from the airport to Hangzhou (final destination is Wulinmen Station, Hangzhou), or take Metro Line 2 to Shanghai Hongqiao Station and then the high speed train to Hangzhou East Railway Station. For how long can I stay at the IASM-Hangzhou?

Participants in 5-day workshops can check into IASM-Hangzhou on Sunday after 4pm and typically remain until the Friday of the same week, at which point they are required to check out by noon.

If you plan to arrive before Sunday or intend to remain in IASM-Hangzhou beyond Friday, please note that you will be expected to book and pay for your own accommodation.

What sorts of amenities are available in my room?

Each room has towels, soap, a hair drier, mini refrigerator, a telephone, a desk, and an ethernet port for personal computers and wifi connection.


Where and how do I get my meals?

Once you are registered for the workshop, your meals (Sunday dinner to Friday lunch) will be covered. Meals are served in the dining hall, which is near the workshop venue. If you cannot find the Dining Hall, please feel free to ask IASM staff, they are willing to assist you.

What are the meal costs for guests?

There is no extra charge for the meals.If your guest wishes to join you for meals at the dining hall, he/she should be able to do so by paying whatever rates the dining hall charges.

Can I request special meals at IASM-Hangzhou if I have dietary restrictions?

All meals served at the dining hall on the Academician Island (where participants take their meals) are mostly buffet-style. As such, participants rarely have difficulty finding food that meets their needs.

What are the climate conditions in Hangzhou?

In October, the temperature in Hangzhou is from 15°C / 59°F to 23°C / 73°F, usually with good weather. For recent updates on current and predicted climate conditions, consult the reports in this website.


What should I pack to wear in Hangzhou?

Generally, it is advisable to wear long-sleeved shirts and thin knitwear. Please also remember to prepare a coat.

China uses 220-volt electrical systems, you will need a voltage transformer/adaptor for your electrical appliances if they operate on a different voltage.

Where can I exchange currencies?

It is well worth going to your personal bank in the country where you are based, because they often exchange currencies without charging a commission fee. Barring that, there are currency exchange desks in most major airports, so you can convert your money to RMB.
