Press Release:

Mathematical Approaches to Interfacial Dynamics in Complex Fluids

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Mathematical Approaches to Interfacial Dynamics in Complex Fluids" workshop from June 25th to June 30th, 2017.

Complex fluids have microscopic structures that affect their macroscopic behavior. Examples include polymers, liquid crystals and various biological fluids. In various engineering and biological contexts, complex fluids often feature interfaces that separate domains of different structures and properties. Since these interfaces move together with the domains, and their location is not known before hand, these problems present great challenges to mathematics and applied sciences.

This workshop will survey the state of the art of mathematical techniques for predicting the interfacial dynamics in complex fluids, and bring these to applied scientists who may incorporate them into their research problems. Meanwhile, contributions from applied scientists studying physical and biological processes will provide new inspirations for mathematical modeling and computation. We expect to attract top researchers from the mathematical and applied fields, and the interdisciplinary exchange may help define future research priorities and directions.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disc iplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineeri ng Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
